(La Nouvelle République)-At the invitation of His Excellency Donald Trump, President of the United States, His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Council of the Togolese Republic, took part on December 4, 2025, in Washington in the official signing ceremony of the peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Rwanda. This mission is part of the African Union’s mediation mandate entrusted to Council President Gnassingbé to promote an African-led solution to tensions in eastern DRC.
The agreement will be signed by Their Excellencies Félix Tshisekedi, President of the DRC, and Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda. The initiative represents a key step in stabilizing the Great Lakes region, fostering mutual trust, and creating a favorable environment for development and investment in strategic sectors.
For months, Council President Gnassingbé has held intensive consultations with regional and international partners, including the United States, France, and Qatar, in close coordination with the African Union. His efforts aim to mobilize support for African-led peace initiatives and strengthen regional stability.
During the ceremony, Council President Gnassingbé delivered a message focused on lasting peace, constructive dialogue, human security, and regional economic integration. His participation underscores the vital role of African leadership in resolving conflicts and building resilient, inclusive societies.
